The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

Directed by James Algar, Clyde Geronomi & Jack Kinney

I had never seen this before, but just based on what I knew about it I had an inkling that I would enjoy myself with it. The first story is that of J. Thaddeus Toad, Esquire and his friends MacBadger, Mr. Rat and Mr. Mole. The story itself is somewhat simple and until Toad breaks from jail it was pretty standard. But when Toad is on the run, the fun picks up. The train chase is pretty awesome. And in addition the entire long scene in Toad Hall where they are trying to retrieve the deed is great cinema. And I really loved that the characters were British. I really enjoyed the last half of this short story.

The second half of the film was the story of Ichabod Crane is well known to many and myself as well. But there was much more back story than I remember, which was nice. It was cool to see how Ichabod fit into the town. The characters of Brown Bones and Catrina were awesome. Let me just throw this out there: Ichabod ate an entire pie in one bite and Brown Bones punched through an entire tree. Yea, I had fun with this one. I preferred Mr. Toad to Ichabod, but both were good. I think this was the first compilation film that I had an above average reaction to.

*** – Good
